Most of us know what underfloor heating looks like when we see it in action - but do we really understand how the system works? How much does it cost? What exactly goes into installing this kind of system?
We decided to put together some information that explains everything about in slab underfloor heating. This guide will help you make better decisions about which type of flooring is best for your home and how to get the most out of your new flooring investment.
What is in slab underfloor heating
Radiant in-slab heating works by heating the concrete floor which then distributes the warmth evenly into the rooms space. A thin, flexible heating cable is installed in the concrete slab to create an energy-efficient thermal mass under your floor.
Concrete has a high thermal mass meaning it will store and distribute heat extremely well and your rooms will stay warm for longer after your heating is switched off than would be the case with a traditional heating system.
How does it work?
The heating cable is fixed to the reinforcing mesh inside the concrete slab and remains permanently protected even if your floor coverings change.
In-slab heating systems are typically installed in new homes and polished concrete applications.
It is generally recommended when installing the in-slab cable to install 200mm spaces between each run to achieve the correct wattage per square meter.
To work out which heating cable is required, multiply the Square Metres of your area by 160 to give the required output (Watts).
Advantages of using underfloor heating
In slab heating has a slow response time of anywhere between 10 and 24 hours but the greatest benefit of in-slab heating is that off-peak power can be used. Heat will be generated cheaply during off-peak hours, stored in the slab and then distributes the heat throughout the day.
In slab floor, heating is suited to large open plan living spaces, commercial and industrial spaces.
The cables are embedded in the concrete slab, which makes the cables protected and maintenance-free.
Floor heating is safe for kids and pets, allergen-friendly and cost-effective.
We all know that heating bills are expensive, but it's hard to justify the cost of an in-slab underfloor heating system.
In-Slab Underfloor Heating is a great way to save on your energy bill and reduce your carbon footprint. But this technology has traditionally been out of reach for most homeowners because of its high installation costs.
